Dating Legends: How to find a match, Pelé style

Are you sitting comfortably? We hope so because hear this: Imagine if Pelé had the same dating brilliance as he did on the football field. Dazzling your date with such fancy footwork that they’d be left amazed beyond recognition. How about unleashing enough pace to give Usain Bolt a run for his money, or sufficient firepower from the halfway line to ruffle the hair of retreating defenders..?

Pelé’s tips to find a match and win

The great and sometimes late Pelé has some big boots to fill, especially if he set the same skills for dating. Yet as his Samba-shaking nation nears fever pitch in Brazil, here are some tips to find a match and win it, from arguably the best-ever player who played in the world’s best-loved game.
Married twice, once dating a Brazilian TV star, and now attached to a woman 21-years’ younger, Pelé has been on the ball in mastering the more enigmatic game; and his tactics could be the volley you need to find the right match on dating websites and beyond.
Here are some of his tips to help you on dating sites such as Cupid…

Dating v Football

Be prepared for your date: When Pelé played for the New York Cosmos so many of his opponents wanted to swap shirts with him that the club had to bring along a wardrobe of extra shirts – 25 in fact!
Remember never to be late for a date. This is one of many dating website tips Pelé would endorse. Despite the 2014 FIFA World Cup being played almost in his own backyard, Pelé missed the first half of his country’s match against Mexico after getting caught in traffic congestion. “For the first time I had to listen to the first half of a Brazil game inside a car as we were stuck in traffic,” he recalled.
Around 102 miles of roads and highways were blocked up in the city.

Always be aware of the competition. If you’re lucky enough to be idolised by millions of people, remember that you might have more than one secret (or not so secret) admirer: In 1969, when Pelé scored his 1000th goal, hundreds raced onto the pitch to mob the Brazilian star. It took over 30 minutes for the game to resume!

Zeal counts for everything, both on the pitch and in the bedroom – but be careful what you wish for on a first date. As a symbol of extended youth and virility, Pelé was commissioned to promote Viagra in 2003. The football hero, who is no stranger to achieving a keepy-uppy stated emphatically: “I haven’t used it, not yet!”

If you get it wrong, get it right next time. So Pelé who would appear to not always play the dating game right the first time. Rumours abound of him being bit of a lady’s man: in addition to his two wives he is reputed to have dated Brazilian TV star, Maria da Graça Xuxa.

Love is ageless. Broaden your age goalposts when searching for a date online. Many people think Pelé looks 20 years younger. So, when creating your profile photo before online dating, remember there’s much more to a person than meets the eye: Italian defender, Tarcisio Burgnich, who marked Pelé in the 1970 World Cup final said afterwards: “I told myself before the game, he’s made of skin and bones just like everyone else — but I was wrong.”
