How to fix a broken relationship that’s falling apart
When a relationship breaks down it can be very sad. For some it can be devastating, especially if there are children involved. No one wants to see a relationship fail so how can you fix a broken relationship and what will it take to repair it?
How to fix an unhappy relationship
In the first instance you have to ask yourself if your relationship really is broken and in need of repair or whether you have just lost your way and find yourself unhappy. Often, the relationship can be repaired with some time, effort and communication from both parties. There are lots of tips for fixing an unhappy relationship. They include making time for each other, going out on dates together to some of the places you used to go, remembering why you fell in love and trying to get back the magic of those early days.
How to save a broken relationship
This can be more difficult than fixing an unhappy relationship. First of all, you need to assess why it is broken. Has one of you broken the others one’s trust? Is it something that can be repaired and is the other party remorseful? Communication is key and you need to be talking things through. Look at how you have arrived at where you are and if counselling might help you to get back to the way things were or to move on to an even better place where you both learn things.
Understanding it takes two to make a relationship work
If only one of you considers the relationship to need repairing then this is a lot more difficult. In order to fix a damaged relationship, it requires both of you to work on it. If the other person is in denial and refuses to see it then you a have a very tall order on your hands. Communication, being honest and laying your cards on the table with some very frank discussions may be necessary to jolt the other person into action.
Are your expectations too high?
Maybe you are putting effort into mending a broken relationship that isn’t broken. Perhaps you have just got stuck in a rut and the honeymoon period is over. Reminding yourself of the reasons why you are good together can help but what is actually broken? Ask your partner if they view it as broken. If you are both of the same view that you are in an unhappy relationship that has broken down then you need to assess if you both want to save it.
At some point in every relationship things happen that you can’t plan for. While you might be really happy and on cloud nine one minute, you could wake up one day and discover that it isn’t what it once was. It takes work to keep a relationship alive and you should never take your happiness for granted. It can’t be hearts and flowers all of the time.
